Warum O2

Hello,

My current subscription with O2 is O2 Free Unlimited Max Flex, I use Netgear nighthawk m5 as my router for internet. I would like to setup an IPsec tunnel over the internet connection between two locations (both locations are personal locations) and also ovpn to access my home network. I suspect this setup would require a dedicated public IP which I hope O2 can provide?

Additionally, I would like to understand if IPSec tunnels are allowed by O2 and what throughput I can expect on the two different VPN’s (IPSec and ovpn).

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Harl

Hello Again,

sorry for another message, but any thoughts or answer to my question please?

Thanks

Harl

Moin Moin,

You could only get a public ipv4 for a SIM from O2. To „switch off“ CGN.

This will cost you 49,99€ (one time fee).

Send an OK for the cost and the last 3 digit of you phone number.

The performance of the tunnel depends on the performance of you tunnel hardware. O2 will not do any DPI, the data has the same speed as any data.

Hello Schluej,

Thanks you for your answer. Before I give a confirmation for the public ipv4, I have the following additional questions:

  1. The public IP which O2 gives, is it a fixed IP or a dynamic IP, meaning, does the public IP change or does it remain fixed. I need to know this so that i know if I need to implement dynamic DNS.
  2. Do I need to change something on my router to enable the public IP?

Thank you for your answer and then I can decide.

Harl

Moin,

  1. Dynamic, static IP are only for business customers. Yes please use a dynDNS service.
  2. Yes the APN to netpublic.

Hello @Harl ,

welcome to the o2 Community 💙.

Looks like your questions were already answered excellently, thank you for your support schluej.

If you want us to activate the public IPv4 address please just let us know and if you have any further questions beforehand then ask away.

Kind regards, Sven

Hello,

Firstly thanks to Schluej for his support. I gave in the request to activate the IPv4 address via your customer hotline. Currently awaiting their confirmation.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Harl

Hello @Harl ,

I just looked and the public IP-Address has been activated for your contract, you should be able to use it once you switch over the APN to netpublic.

Kind regards, Sven

Hello,

Thanks for the update. However, does a public IP mean that I will no longer have international roaming? I am currently abroad and have no connectivity, it used to work fine. I have tried with both APN settings of internet and netpublic. Or is international roaming blocked by O2 for some reason?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Harl

Some times it is not enabled, i think you can enable it in mein O2.

Unfortunately mein O2 does not provide that option, it may be a good option to include in mein O2. This will make it easier for customers who travel frequently to enable it if it is turned off from O2.

In my case I can do nothing, while paying a premium subscription, which I can not make use of when I really need it.

I tried enabling it through my router (Netgear nighthawk M5),  where the SIM card is installed. But O2 sim card does not accept the request from the router. On the other hand why does O2 even turn this option off??? Can this be enabled from O2 or do I need to call support?

I am only assuming that Netgear Nighthawk M5 is not compatible router for O2, is there a list of compatible routers from O2? And please not that old list which I saw once with outdated routers.

Thanks

Harl

@Harl hello, sorry for the late answer.
Are the issues with the Netgear Router still exists or where you able to find allready a solution for your request?
Please give us a sign, when you still need any support.

kindly regards
Michael

Hello,

@o2_Michael Apologies for my late reply as well, I just came across this message. Also providing what I did as it may help someone else. My Netgear router would not work, even after going through tech support session with their engineers. Hence, I replaced it with a Teltonika RUTX-50, which works fine. It takes a bit of time to get familiar with RUT OS but the options which this router provides are excellent.

Hope the above helps someone either experiencing similiar issues or looking for an alternate router.

Regards,

Harl
