Using a used FritzBox 6660 router with O2 Kabel internet
Hey Folks,
I am wanting to apply for an O2 connection at my new place. I have a used fritzbox 6660 router which I would like to use with the new connection.
Question is, apart from providing O2 the MAC address of the router - is there something else that needs to be done from my end? I have also heard people asking to reach out to the old provider with which the router was used to deregister the MAC address - challenge is I am not sure who the old provider was as I bought this router from Ebay.
Also, I believe while configuring the router I would require the PPPOE username/password - where can I find these details? Will it be sent to my address by post?
Would appreciate some help here.

Moin Moin,
If the FRITZ!Box 6660 Cable has AVM Artikelnummer 20002910 and the CM-MAC has been removed from Vodafone, it should work.
The authentication will be done bzw. CM-MAC on password or user is needed!
@schluej Thanks for the response. I see the Artikelnummer of the FritzBox is 20002932 - Does this mean this wouldn’t work with O2?
Hello @Spaniard89 ,
the articlenumber 2000 2932 belongs to branded units from Vodafone, as such you won’t be able to use that router for a connection here, as these are blacklisted and will remain so.
Kind regards, Sven
And selling a router with this Artikelnummer is a little cheat, even Vodafone will connect this router.
For o2 you could buy one of the following routers:
@o2_Sven and @schluej Thanks a ton for the response - your response will help others like me from wasting their time/money on Ebay or Ebay Kleinanzeigen. Last question on renting the router directly from O2 - how long will I have to pay for the router? Is there a limit on the number of months I would have to continue paying the rent?
Hello @Spaniard89 ,
if you rent a router from us, then the monthly fee is for as long as you are using that unit.
Kind regards, Sven
Here are the prices, if you need good WLAN you should choose the 6690.
You have to pay a one time fee 49,99€ for administration and 9,99€ for post and packing.
The router is for rent only, you have to send him back if you end the contract!
But if there is a defect on the router you will get a new one with out a extra charge, if you send the defect back to O2.
Thanks a lot both of you. You are awesome. I need to figure out what I should with the firtzbox I bought from ebay - feels like my 100 euros went down the drain.
Do you pay with PayPal?
Then start a case. You get from Vodafone the message that the FRITZ!Box could not be used if not rent from Vodafone. So the router ist useless.
Or first ask the seller.
@schluej sadly I bought it from ebay kleinanzeigen. I might have to sell it back on kleinanzeigen again with a note that it's a vodafone branded router, and it can only be used a bridge.
Hello @Spaniard89,
I am glad to see you already recieved lots of good information from @schluej :-)
Unfortunately cable internet is quite different to a DSL connection. WIth a DSL connection you can use any router that you like and that matches the requirements for the connection since the authetification is done via the username and password. Each DSL connection has a dedicated line in contracst to a cable connection that uses a shared medium. So the cable connection needs additional authentification which is done through the MAC address of the router.
I hope your questions were answered, if there is still something that you need additional information for just drop us a line, you know where to find us :-)
