I would like to remove completely (not change) my bank account details from my O2 account for safety reasons. But there is no option to remove bank details once we have entered it, there is only change option.

you can stop the direct debit but not remove the bank details completely. But - your data is safe on our portal.

welcome to our o2 community. 
No, you don’t need to contact your bank in order to change your charging option. You can change the settings on your “Mein o2” account. Just remove the checkmarks and your sim won’t be charged automatically anymore.
