AS FAR AS I KNOW, there is no need to cancel any prepaid contract, unless you want to port your number to a US american provider. As I understand you that far, you want to keep your number for maybe being availble, when you’re back in Germany, right?
As mentioned you don’t need to cancel any prepaid-tariff. Just watch out to make a call or send a message inbetween 6 months via that number just to avoid your number will be deactivated and given free for other users. (After 6 months the SIM will be deactivated, after further time completely shut off without being reactivateable)

@JoachimK. He wants to cancel a postpaid contract and convert it to a prepaid SIM.
@Indianinfrankfurt You would need to get a new prepaid SIM (with o2 or another provider), port the number from the contract to the prepaid card and then request a goodwill early termination of the contract. That is only possible if you deregister in Germany.
