Unstable internet lte

Hi Joe,

I have a question. I live in Germany for a little while now, and I am still trying to figure out the best internet option for me.

Apparently, based on my address, my only 2 options were DSL with 10 Mbps or LTE internet with up to 50 Mbps. Obviously, I chose the LTE internet. So O2 Homespot My Home M, it is.

In my free time, I love to play video games. However, when other devices are being used, or when someone in the network is watching Netflix, ping increases up to unplayable latencies. (like 200+ ms).

I already asked for a better router, so now I have the O2 Homespot 2 LTE router. However, this router does not have any option to manage bandwidth within the network, I have packet loss, and the connection is just not stable for gaming.

I wanted to ask you if you have any recommendations for me on what to do. Is there a way to prioritize games? Are there other routers that do support this? Or should I just go for the slower dsl internet?

Any advice is very welcome!

Thanks a lot.

So in my spare time, I like to play games.

@Julvanwa Hmm only one BTS  (91402) which needs to cover a large area. Can you arrange the Homespot 2 to window where the tower stand?

What information over signal strength you get, if you login in the router? Can you post screenshot from this?

@Joe Doe I put the router to the window, pointing towards the tower.

This is the signal I get:

@Julvanwa If you made now a Speedtest (https://www.speedtest.net/de) what values you get.
Good news. You are connected over Band 1. But your signal level must been improved.

@Tom_ Do you have an antenna recommendation for the customer?

@Julvanwa Have you a notebook for install https://www.pingplotter.com (free version) for check the network for a long period?

Speed looks good for me.

Hi @Julvanwa ,

is the ping value mostly the standard or does it often dip way over that once a different service in use over the homespot?

The reception does not seem so great; Is it an improvement over the previous model?

Viele Grüße,
Kurt

Hi @o2_Kurt ,

Every time another service or device in the homespot is used, the ping goed way up. Especially like Netflix takes a lot of bandwidth. Then its basically impossible to play games.

Supposedly, this is the upgraded homespot model: O2 homespot 2 router.

I asked for this router change, hoping it would improve a bit. But that isn’t the case.

@Joe Doe These are the result I get when using Pingplotter (I used it with my windows pc btw):

@Julvanwa I would try an external antenna.  But I'm not the right person to give you an antenna recommendation.

Hmmm, the Speedtest looks normal. I think an antenna wouldn’t bring any changes here.

I think for online games it can help:

  • to book a public IP to your contract
  • to use Network cable and no WiFi
  • or change from Homespot → DSL

@o2_Kurt,

What exactly does an external antenna do and how is it different from the internal one?

I already use a network cable. Can I book this public IP at o2?

Changing to dsl might indeed be solution. However, based on my address I can only get DSL internet up to 10 MBit/s:

Dear @Julvanwa ,

you can have the public iP address booked with us at a price of 49.99 euros. If this does not work out, you can cancel the booking within 14 days and the costs will be refunded to you.
The advantage of an outdoor antenna is that you can point it as directly as possible at the transmitter mast and that it is not affected by the building materials of the house or flat, as is the case with indoor antennas. But @Tom_ is the expert here.

Kind regards,

Andrea

Hi @o2_Andrea ,

That sounds good!

What exactly does a public IP address do?

Thank you all for the great help btw.

Dear @Julvanwa ,

possible applications are:
Customer wants Nintendo DS. use as a mobile server; Playstation/Microsoft Network
Server must be accessible from outside
this requires a public IP address
Customer also requires a dynamic DNS service that can make the IP address visible from the outside

If you with to get a public iP-address, please tell us.

Kind regards,

Andrea

@o2_Andrea

So if I understand well, this is only needed for Nintendo games or Playstation/microsoft Network games?

I do not use either Nintendo, nor a playstation.

So, in that case, does it still make sense to book a public IP-address?

Many thanks!

Hi @Julvanwa ,

it is mostly used for cases, in which the shared-IP prohibits the connection to your device.

In case of the mentioned serviced, it is mostly due to the usage of shared IP which results in a NAT 3 classification, making connections to the Services (Sony PSN or example) impossible.

There are other services or games which require some open ports; something you cannot set while using the standard shared-IP.

You’ve mentioned the following:

Julvanwa schrieb:

Every time another service or device in the homespot is used, the ping goed way up. Especially like Netflix takes a lot of bandwidth. Then its basically impossible to play games.

Does this mean, that gaming usually works if no other device is active in your network?

If that’s the case, I would not recommend the public-dynamic-IPv4-Adress, since it sounds more like a problem of bandwitdh or some kind, rather than a connection problem to me.

Best regards,
Kurt

Hi @o2_Kurt @Joe Doe,

I still face the same issue, I get up to 2000-10.000 ms while playing games in my pc.

I booked a public server, which did allow us to play online on the Nintendo Switch for example, but I feel like the internet on my computer has gotten even worse.

Does the ping usually increase even more when changing to a public server? Or should this not affect the ping compared to the private server?

Is there a way to choose per device which server to use? (For example with the Nintendo, I prefer the public server and for my pc I prefer the private one)

Is there really no other way to get more reliable, low ping internet? Are there other Routers for example that work for My Home M? Fritzbox maybe?

Many thanks for your help!

Best Regards,

Hello @Julvanwa,

to be absolutely honest with you, an internet connection via a cellular network is in most cases the worst possible connection you can chose.

Since your router shares the possible bandwith in a mobile cell with any other users that are also conbnected, be it either via mobile phone or via a router it is possible that depending on the utilization of this network you will encounter lower bandwith or higher latency.

For online gaming in most cases a fixed line like for example DSL is the best solution, even if the bandwith may not be as high as the possible maximum data rate of the cellular network.

Regarding posisble differences of public or private servers it also depends on how this servers are connected to the internet itself, but it should not result in a ping high in the thousands.

In my opinion we have on the one side more than one device that accesses the internet via the router at the same time what will influence tha bandwith and the latency and in addition to that the cellular etwork itself may also be under some load resulting in even more influence of bandwith and latency.

Even if a fixed line may only have a net speed of about 10MBit/s this speed will always be available for the router, decreasing possible bottlenecks for latency.

Regards,

Lars

Hi @o2_Lars,

That is very valuable information, thanks a lot!

I do know that cable internet is by far better and more consistent than the LTE internet.

Is there a way I can try DSL for a while to see if this fixes the problem? Or can I book DSL as well?

Currently I use My Home M LTE.

Many thanks!

Julian

Hi @o2_Lars

Another small question;

"An manchen Adressen verfügt O2 über keine Gestattung der Hauseigentümer seine Kabel-Produkte anzubieten. Kunden, die an einer betroffenen Adresse wohnen, können sich an ihren Vermieter wenden."

Is this also the reason why I can't choose the cable option on my address at the moment?

What can the landlord do in this case?

Kind Regards

Julian

Hello @Julvanwa,

we do not offer a DSL trial but you have the possibility to order any contract as a Flex variant with only one month of minimum runtime. Additional activation fees will occour. regarding the cable variant it is possible that the house owner has a contract that limits the access to the cable connection to only one provider, in such case we have no possibility to offer a connection via cable at that given address.

Lars

Thanks @o2_Lars

Last question, does My Home M LTE internet work with other Routers? Maybe a fritzbox Router?

So that I can at least configure the QOS settings somehow.

Many thanks for the help.

Best regards,

Julian

Hello @Julvanwa,

you can use the SIM card in any router that does support it, if you also need the possibility to make calls also, please be aware that the router has to support Voice ofer LTE (VoLTE). Several router are suggested from other users in this thread. :-)

Regards,

Lars
