Improving signal strength on o2 Homespot M?

Hey all.

My problem is simple. I literally can’t go into another room and stay connected to my LTE Homespot M. If I just close a door, I’m down to 800kb/s.

How can I improve the signal strength?
I have a booster right next to it, and the booster speeds are really low. 3mb/s.

I’ve read a lot on here about the Homespot M (after I’ve bought it) and I have to say I’m largely disgusted by o2’s attitude towards customers on here. I just read about a customer paying for 220mb/s never once reaching above 40mb/s… and they just closed the thread.

Hopefully I get treated better, but we’ll see.

To be clear, it is a WiFi issue, right?

LTE. It’s an LTE-connected Homespot.

Hello @tbarnfield ,

as @Droggelbecher just mentioned it seems to be a WiFi issue. I don’t know your router and I don’t know about your flat. If connection in next room is poor maybe there are water pipes or electric cables in the wall that force the signal strength down. If possible please try to change from 5 GHz to 2,4 GHz (for WiFi) to ensure you get better connection next room.

Take a look here (sorry, it’s german, but you should get the thing...)

https://www.elektronik-kompendium.de/sites/net/1712061.htm

Just check. If mobility in your flat is neccessary you should think about a better router beside the 2,4 GHz.

2,4 GHz band on the other side ist overcrowded. Use https://www.vistumbler.net/ to check this. If you use Mac or Linux please answer again.

Understood. Unfortunately, I do have Mac.

I’ve looked into, and you’re right, it is a Wi-Fi strength problem. I have the o2 Homespot router that is supplied with the contract. Would it be a good idea to buy a new router with SIM card capability?

Hello @tbarnfield ,

herefor please check this out:

But first of all… can you change the WiFi signal from 5 GHz to 2,4 GHz? This should be your first try. If yes check out if problem still exists, otherwise think about a new (used) better router.

Thanks so much, I’m downloading now.

I’m on the 2.4GHz network I believe, as that’s the signal connected to my booster in the Tether app.

In that case, can anyone recommend a better signal solution/router/etc?

I see that an antenna could be useful, but it might just be better buying a new router, right?

Hello @tbarnfield ,

antennas for your homespot are programmed to receive. Remember The Eagles…

So yes, a better router should satisfy you. But I can’t give you any advice which one to buy. There are enough other with experience to help you.

Please forgive my poor english.

No problem, your English is great.

Are there any key stats I should look out for on new routers? For Wi-Fi signal strength?

That way, I can know I’m getting a better router than this terrible LTE Homespot.

Hello @tbarnfield ,

most folks here would recommend a Gigacube. Be sure that router does have a CAT 19 Modem and you should be done. There are used ones at ebay to find but be sure they are not branded!

Ah, interesting. And the Gigacube definitely works with an O2 SIM, right? I know they’re usually meant to work for Vodafone.

Oh and one more question.

Is it better to buy an antenna or buy a new router?

Hello @tbarnfield ,

yes, you are absolutly right! That’s why I told you to be sure, that this router is not branded!

Otherwise you need a GSM-Flash-Tool but I won’t give here a link…

Hello @tbarnfield ,

an antenna is good for poor LTE-signal. It doesn’t change your WiFi problems.

Thank you so much for the recommendation. Looking at it now.

Ok, well, that’s confusing. The speed is also really poor. I’m getting 1mb/s  –– but these stats are quite good, no?

RSRP:  -71 dBm
RSRQ: -7 dB
RSSI: -46 dBm

Absolutely. Maybe others can help you. I’m out of here.

Have a nice day :)

Hey guys.

So I’m getting good reads from my router –– but the speed is averaging at 10mbps, and half the time goes down to 1-0.5mbps. Is there any way I can look into why? I’m sat next to the router, by the way!

Hi @tbarnfield ,

can you also post the connected Cell (ID)?

Have you tried setting up the HomeSpot in a different place, on the other side of the flat for example?

Best regards,

Kurt

Edit: I’ve merged your threads into one.

Thanks for the tipps, @JoachimK.:hugging:

Best regards,

Kurt

Hey Kurt.

Unfortunately I can’t move the router, as the signal is really, really weak. It’s not making it into my room, which is 6 meters away.

Do you have any suggestions for this?

I switched to the 5ghz connection, and it’s performing a little better.

I will get the cell ID for you ASAP.

Hi @tbarnfield

nice that you already got so good suggestions from @JoachimK.

Thanks for your messages. It is nice to read that your HomeSpot works fine with 5 Ghz.

Normally, you get good connections if you set the router near the window.

Have you already tried this?

Unfortunately, we cannot give you a guarantee for any range. But if you turn your HomeSpot to 2,4 Ghz you get a deeper connection and thereby a bigger range.

You also have the possibility to connect your HomeSpot to a repeater. Just have a look here:

(only in German)

I hope that these suggestions are already helpful for you.

Loving greetings,

Tobias
