Roaming charged in 1 min

Good morning,

I just landed in Brazil and after turning on my phone and deactivating the "plane mode" I got plenty of messages from whatsapp and instagram.

5 minutes later I get an SMS telling me that I will be charged for every MB used and that the price is 1.49€ per MB. In 5 mins, 30MB were consumed.

I refuse to pay such an amount of money, especially when I had no chance to deactivate the roaming from my phone (the service started running automatically). Would you mind helping me with this, as I learned how it works and this situation should not repeat again?

You can verify that I have never used roaming outside the EU before and that the SMS with the information regarding the costs were sent after I received the messages from the apps.

Thank you in advance and Merry Christmas!

Moin,

roaming will be charged in the Moment you will use it.

Turn off phone and After gestartet do not enter the PIN of the SIM.

If you have 300 Mbit/s, 30 MBit in 5 Minutes is nothing!

Hello @Franz_rod_437,

Welcome to our o2 Community. 😊

I hope you had or continue to have a great time in Brazil.

I see that schluej was able to answer you quickly and tell you that roaming is charged directly when used. You reported that you received a lot of Whatsapp and Instagram messages, which explains the Mbits used. So make sure you disable roaming while you are in a non-EU country.

If you have any further questions, please let me know. :)

Kind regards, Lea

Good morning @Franz_rod_437,

I can completely understand the shock you felt when you turned off airplane mode and the mobile data kicked in immediately. It’s always best to disable roaming before switching off airplane mode – but you’re well aware of that now.

For general information about roaming outside the EU: To protect you, we have a cost control mechanism in place that applies to both calls and mobile data. This mechanism has two stages: the first block is triggered at €59.50. If unblocked, it continues until €119 is reached. After that, it can be unblocked again and continues until reaching your personal limit.

In your case, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been, and you managed to turn off mobile data within the first cost control threshold, which was a good move. However, your upcoming invoice (08/01/2025) will be higher. You’ll be able to see all the details in your itemised bill.

A refund of these charges isn’t possible, as mobile data was indeed used. If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Best regards,
Maren ⛄
