How to let someone else take over your contract

If somebody takes over your contract, they also take over all services and obligations which are part of your contract.

To let someone take over your contract is useful when:

  • the user of the contract has reached the age of 18
  • if you are using the contract for business purposes, but your employer is paying for it
  • your company name and commercial register entry changes
  • if you are leaving Germany permanently and a friend or family member wants to use your contract.

How do I initiate the change of ownership of my mobile contract to another person?

You can initiate the change of ownership online by logging in to “Mein o2” and using the following link: Vertragsinhaberwechsel

After you have clicked the “weiter” button on the landing page for the change of ownership, you will be asked to enter the name and email address of the person who wants to take over your contract. This person will then receive an email containing a link via which he or she can confirm their intention to take over your contract. The link will be valid for 14 days.

Do I need to fill in a form?

No, there is no form to fill in if somebody else is taking over your contract as you can initiate the change of ownership directily online using this link: Vertragsinhaberwechsel.

Can I also let somebody else take over my o2 MyHandy contract?

No, this is not possible as o2 MyHandy contracts cannot be transferred to other persons. You can, however, change the bank account from which the monthly instalments are taken by having somebody else complete a direct debit mandate.

How do I know that the change of ownership of my contract has been completed?

We will send a text message to confirm that the process has been completed. The text message will be sent to the mobile number provided.

Are there any charges for the change of ownership?

You can find the respective price list, including all our service charges here: Price lists.

Are there any different requirements when a business customer takes over my contract?

Only the name and email address of a contact person are required in the first step. The new contracting party can send us details of their company in later steps.

Does the new contract owner also take over special conditions that applied to my contract?

No. Special conditions will not be automatically transferred. However, the new contract owner can send us a proof of eligibility for special conditions (e.g. for our young persons tariffs), in which case the special conditions will then be applied.

Can a minor take over my contract?

No. The new contract owner needs to be at least 18 years old.

When can I cancel my contract?

You can cancel your contract at the end of its minimum contract term. If you give notice of your intention to cancel before somebody else takes over your contract, your cancellation notice will no longer be valid and the new contract owner will need to cancel the contract themselves if they so wish.

Does a change of ownership automatically lead to an extension of my contract?

No. Your contract duration does not change.

Does the mobile number change when someone takes over my contract?

No. The new contract owner also takes over your mobile number.

Is my cancellation still valid when someone takes over my contract?

If someone else takes over your contract, your cancellation notice will no longer be valid. The new contract owner will need to cancel the contract themselves if they so wish.

Latest Update: 03/2022

Hi there, I noticed that it says “Note: Currently no contract holder changes are possible. Status: 13.01.22.”. What’s the reason for this and are there any plans to allow contract holder changes soon?

Hello @kwitt8989,

thank you for your question.
Unfortunately, it is a technical problem and we have been working on a solution ever since. We very much hope that the change can be made again soon! Would a change be urgently necessary for you?

Kind regards
Jessica

Hello, I can see it has been a few weeks now and the issue is still there. I would like to move my contract to another owner but if it doesn’t work then I’ll just have to cancel it

Hello @Agatamc is there a special reason why do you want to change the contract owner?

best regards
Michael

I’m moving out of the apartment and the next tenant would like to keep the internet contract

@Agatamc i sent you a personal message, because we need some personal informations from you.
It would be nice, if you leave a short note here, that you have written a personal message 😊

best regards
Michael

@Agatamc have you received my message. Please answer else we are not able to help you.

Michael

Hi there

I have the same issue:

I noticed that it says “Note: Currently no contract holder changes are possible. Status: 13.01.22.”.

I would like to move my contract to another owner but if it doesn’t work then I’ll just have to cancel it.

I’m also moving out of the apartment and the next tenant would like to keep the internet contract.

Could you please support me on this?

Best regard Julija

Hello @julijahorvatzeilhofer,

I can just inform you that the contract holder change can now be carried out again. You should now be able to order it again.

Kind regards
Jessica 😊

Hi @o2_Jessica

It is still not working. Is there any other way to do it?

Best regards

Julija

Hello @julijahorvatzeilhofer,

what error message do you get when you try?

Kind regards
Jessica 🌷

Nothing opens when I click on “Weiter”.

Best

Julija

Hello @julijahorvatzeilhofer,

are you trying to make the switch via the app or the web browser?
I would recommend that if you have problems with either option, you try the other.
So far we haven't received any other messages that it still doesn't work. Feel free to try it out, we'll figure it out.

Kind regards
Jessica 🌷

Hi Jessica!

Im trying through the browser. How do I do it through app? On my phone when I click on the link in SMS it opens it in Safari.

Best regards

Julija

Hello @julijahorvatzeilhofer,

exactly, you will be redirected there 😊
But in general, as an option, customers can also carry out the process on their mobile phone from the app.
Did it work for you?

Kind regards
Jessica 🌷

Hi @o2_Jessica

From the SMS link I am redirected to Safari not the app.

How do I do it from the app?

Best regards

Julija

Hello @julijahorvatzeilhofer,

that is absolutely right. From there you can order the transfer of the contract accordingly!
As written in my previous answer, it was only a hint that there is generally the possibility to select the contract transfer via the app. You will then be redirected.
Did everything work for you?

Kind regards
Jessica 🌷

Hi! When I click on the link on the article I’m being redirected to my MyO2 overview and from there I can’t access the form to do the transfer.

Hello @Heloisa,

you do not have to use a form to change the contract holder. The change is made via the My o2 app. Simply follow the steps in this FAQ. If you have any further questions, please contact us here 😊

Kind regards
Jessi 🌻

But when I click on the link there’s nothing regarding change of ownership, just the overview of my account.

Hello @Heloisa ,

have you tried accessing the page directly via a browser instead of going through the app. Some parts of the portal can behave a bit differently between the two. Or have you maybe already managed to start the process in the mean time?

Kind regards, Sven

Hello,

I had applied for transfer of ownership of my home WIFI contract. All the procedures where done and at the end the new owner received a mail saying that he will receive a link via email to make a binding order to change the contract owner. It was mentioned in the email that this will take only 1 or 2 days, however its been a month and have not received the email yet. Please let me know the further procedures.

With regards

Juwana Jose

Hello @Juwana jose,

welcome here to our community 💙
1 month is a very long time 🤔 So you're talking about changing the contract owner from the landline connection, right? Did the new contractual partner not receive the email about this or did he receive it, fill it out and receive no response? Nothing ended up in the spam folder?

Greetings

Kathi 🌞

He has not received the link that has been mentioned in this message

Thank you @Juwana jose 🙂
