VERY low internet speed with HomeSpot

Hi!

I have the O2 Homespot with the MyHome M internet package.

When I started the contract I was reassured that the connection at my address (Bremen 28209) is good. The speed limit of my contract is 50Mbit/s, but I was told at least 20-30 Mbit/s should be there at all times.

However, Internet speed barely reaches 3 Mbit/s! It is virtually impossible to WFH, make calls. Most of the time it’s even hard to just open a Google search page.

I tried to move the router around the house and with the best position possible I can get maybe 6-7 Mbit/s, which is still very-very far from what was promised. I tried to reboot the router, didn’t help.

There has not been any disruption of network documented in my area, according to the O2 website.

Is there a chance it might be some router malfunctioning or maybe wrong settings?

Unfortunately, since I don’t speak German, I can’t really get help from the Hotline.

Could you please help me solve the problem?

I am attaching a screenshot with the network connection info I got from the router page.

Please let me know if there’s more info you’d need from my side to check the problem out.

Thank you!

Hello @Valeriya_Z, and welcome to our o2 community :relaxed:

I was happy to take a look at the network situation at your address. I can't find any abnormalities there, the coverage is good and sufficiently available. Do you also notice such a low performance with your mobile phone? Can you roughly estimate the date since which the problem has occured or is it permanent?

Best regards

Giulia

Hello Giulia!

Yes, the situation persists up until now and it has been like this from the very beginning. Unfortunately, being very busy with moving in, I missed the 14-days cancellation period, otherwise I would just have done that.

Regarding the phone internet - it is a bit hard to say if it is the same low as the HomeSpot because I do not use it for Zoom calls, but generally it is not very good in my house either.

Could you please check again if there is any issue at my address?

And also could you inform me whether it is possible to change my HomeSpot to a standart DSL contract?  Maybe the speed would be better with DSL.

Otherwise I would really have to cancel the contract due to the speed being very different from what was promised in the contract.

Thank you!

Best,

Valeriya

Hi @Valeriya_Z ,

thanks for your reply. There is no issue reported in your area, but thinks look a bit different further away. Would you mind taking a look at your HomeSpot Settings again? I’d like to know the Cell-ID, with which we can locate the base station you’re connected to. Even though the next station in your area seems to be fine, you could be connected to a different station with a different status. The general average speed would be nice to know as well; is it still around 3-6 Mbit/s?  How is the connection during the later hours? Do you experience better speeds in the evening? With that information, we`ll gladly inform our co-workers from the contract department avout your wish to switch to another technology.

Best regards,
Kurt

Hi @o2_Kurt

Thank you for your response!

It seems like there is no Cell-ID but there is another thing called PCI, and it is currently 252

I am attaching a screenshot with the current data. As for the speed, it is hard to pinpoint a trend - for example, today it is really low in the evening and it was okay during the day, but sometimes it is the other way around… Right now (~22:00 on 31.07) the speed is ~4-6 Mbps (and the signal strength is only 38%, even though it is right next to a window)

Best wishes,

Valeriya

Hello @Valeriya_Z ,

you seem to be connecting to the Station that is situated south of you near to “Am Dobben”. The station seems to be getting a lot of traffic, which is probably also why you the connection at times takes such a sharp downturn. Can you situate your HomeSpot close towards an eastern window? As you have a station that is closer to you, that also looks to be less used than the one that you are currently connected to. That station would be situated at the Hospital “St.Joseph Stift”

Kind regards, Sven

Dear @o2_Sven ,

Thank you for the suggestion! Unfortunately, in my apartment I do not have windows overlooking in this direction, and moving the router that way means it is the furthest from the windows I have, and the signal gets even worse.

Is there a way to somehow manually switch the station on my router? Or maybe to get a different O2 router, or an external antenna?

Best wishes,

Valeriya

Hello @Valeriya_Z ,

a bandlock or manual switching of the cells that you are connected to isn’t avaiable with the HomeSpot 2. It does however support external antennas, so that could be a solution to atleast gain more speed and stability for your connection.

If you want to go with an external antenna, I’m sure that @Tom_ has some suggestions for a fitting model.

Kind regards, Sven
