Cancelling DSL and phone contracts for a move abroad

Hi, I am moving abroad next month and I am trying to avoid as much of the circular bureaucracy that seems to be baked into cancelling contracts here. I have put in my cancellation notice for my DSL and phones, and called the phone line indicated by the website after putting in the online kündigung notice. The person I spoke to wouldn’t accept my verbal confirmation to end my contracts and that I have to send my abmeldung for the termination, but I can’t submit that until right before I leave. Is there anyway to confirm that, yes I do want to end my contract early and avoid a portion the three months of charges for a service that I am not using? I’d like to put in my notice now and preferably pay only two months, since I am trying to give as much notice as possible. I have contract letters and a rental agreement in the US, but the abmeldung is the only thing we are missing from what I can tell form other posts on this forum to cancel for moves abroad. Why must the paperwork be so circular? I also tried to cancel four months ago in person, but the shop wouldn’t accept my request for termination or no contract renewal then either (it was at the time of a contract roll over). I’m really frustrated by the customer service and trying to do my best to get things taken care of before I move, but the system seems set up to force failure for your customers.

Any help is appreciated.

You will have to pay three months from the date of your move however early you submit the termination notice. You can send in the form now with the documents you have, then you can send in the Abmeldung as soon as you have it (7 days before you move).

What is circular? You can also just wait until you have everything. It is hardly your provider's fault that the authorities won't issue the Abmeldung until a week before your move date?

o2 also offers all o2 DSL tariffs without a minimum contract period with only 4 weeks' notice to the end of the month ("Flex contract"). In this case, no further documents need to be submitted for termination.
A fixed-term contract, on the other hand, can normally only be terminated with a notice period of 3 months to the end of the contract term. For this purpose, a notification by letter or fax to the o2 customer service is sufficient - no further documents need to be submitted.

However, you did not want a Flex contract, but a 24-month contract, which you now do not want to fulfil until the end. This is not permitted by contract.
The German law only provides for one exception, which must be proven with the corresponding documents and is subject to a penalty payment of 3 months' basic fee. You have created the necessary effort yourself by not wanting to fulfil the contract.

Hello @cahso and welcome to our o2 community :-)

If you move abroad your conract can be canceled before the minimum contract term is reached. Some documents are needed for this, like for example the“Abmeldebestätigung” and further documents regarding the new address you are moving to.

You will find all information regarding this process in an atricle we wrote on this

Lars
