Urgent: How to cancel contract early (moving abroad)?

Hi, I’m an exchange student and I’m leaving Germany soon.
I sent the cancellation form with documents by email but got no reply.
O2 shop staff told me I need to send a letter, but I don’t have time.

Is there any way to cancel without sending a physical letter?

Thanks!

Hello @Ruksina,

welcome to our o2 Community 🙂

The article that Bumer linked explains about how to go about cancelling a contract when moving abroad.

Important is that the colleagues from our department responsible need proof a deregistration here in Germany and registration in a country abroad.

If there are further questions please also ask them here 🙂

Best Regards,

Gerrit

I’m scheduled to leave Germany in 4 days, but unfortunately, I still haven’t received my official deregistration document from the city office but I already submitted since 25th july.

As I would like to complete the cancellation process before I leave, would it be possible to temporarily accept my university deregistration and flight ticket instead?

You will submit the documents later.

You can start the process now and submit the deregistration document from your current place of residence as soon as you receive it. 1 month later the contact will be terminated. Flight tickets and an exmatriculation document are not proof of you permanently leaving the country.

Can I submit the deregistration certificate online (by email). Do you know when I will receive the final confirmation of contract termination? I need the cancellation to be effective within August, as I will also be closing my German bank account.

I submitted my deregistration request online to the city office on July 25, which is exactly 14 days before my departure on August 7 – the earliest possible date according to the city’s regulations.

Unfortunately, I still haven’t received the official deregistration certificate, and the city office does not allow requesting it earlier than two weeks before leaving the country.

If you are closing your bank account you should switch to paying by bank transfer. You can submit the document using the contact form. Even if you can submit the document by 7th August it will be another month before the contract ends and then you can expect a final invoice in September because the contract is billed retrospectively.

Ok thank you. I’ve already submitted the cancellation form with my university deregistration and flight ticket as supporting documents. Would it be possible to additionally submit the confirmation of my Abmeldung request (i.e. the form I filled and submitted) via the contact form?

The reason is that I might not be able to receive the official physical Abmeldung certificate in time, since I will be moving out of my student accommodation and returning to my home country.

Yes, that is possible.

Hello @Ruksina,

great that bs0 and Bumer provided you with all that good and important information how to go about cancelling your contract.

When you have switched to paying by transfer in your Mein o2 customer account you can then terminate your bank account, and having sent the cancellation form you can then send the documnets as proof later when you have obtained them, the contact form is indeed a valid way.

If you have any further question just ask them here as well 🙂

Best Regards,

Gerrit
