I have o2 homeSpot contract for about 3 weeks. Unfortunately it works quite unstable for me:

  • slow connection ca. 3-5mbits/s in rush hours
  • router may stuck and I have to reboot it manually
  • it’s on the latest firmware

I wonder what LTE frequenses does the device support. Does it make sense for my location (Dachstr., 81243 Münich) to upgrade the device to another compatible one to gain better connection. Are all frequencies supported already? Are all LTE specs freatures supported by the router?

I’ve tried inserting the SIM card to iPhone X and a mobile Huawei router - both were able to connect to the cellular network, but internet did not work at all.

The o2 Homespot does only support Band 3,7,20, no Band 1 and only supports 2CA and 64 QAM down, 16 QAM up, as it is a LTE Cat. 6 device.

Could you post a screenshot of the “LTE/3G status” section of the web interface? It would help us to assess the situation better. And how fast is the connection at best?

Only these stationary routers are supported at the moment:  Huawei Router B310s-22, B311s-220, B315s-22, B525s-23a (o2 Homespot), B528s-23a (Vodafone GigaCube), B618s-22d (Telekom Speedbox LTE IV), B818-260 (Vodafone GigaCube Cat19 (Neu)), B900-230 (AI Cube), H112-370. AVM LTE Router Fritz!Box 6890 LTE, Fritz!Box 6820 v2 LTE. Alcatel LTE Router Linkhub HH40 (Congstar Homespot)

Thanks

I have already turned the router to LTE only mode (to avoid it from jumping into 3G). The best I’ve seen was about 25mbit/s down and 22mbit/s up, for example in the night.

This is the screenshot from the router web ui:

I see the problem, you are connected to a LTE Band 20 only site with great signal strength and very poor signal quality. A close neighbour site has Band 1 and 3 as well.

I have an unofficial suggestion for you to try. First get a Huawei Gigacube B528 second hand (just the hardware) for example for about 20 € on ebay-kleinanzeigen.de locally in your area or about 40€ on eBay.  They are known to be  far more stable and are certified to be used for o2 Homespot. Then you force LTE and disable Band 20, so your Gigacube will connect to the other site, you should see a grat improvement in throughput.

To do that download the FOSS (unofficial) Huawei Band Tool 0.1, edit the credentials and IP in the txt if you changed them and execute:

huawei_band_tool --network-mode 03 --network-band 3FFFFFFF --lte-band +1800+2100+2600

The change does not survive a reboot of the Gigacube, but it doesn't need to be restarted frequently, because of its great stability.

I’ve made it a try with the Gigacube router (aka Huawei B528s-23a). The device was able to connect to the network, but the internet connection was not established. What is the right APN profile configuration for the device to work with O2 network? `internet` or `surf2` APN names did not work either.

The connectivity level from the Huawei:

It looks like O2 HomeSpot does not support any other Routers (but the one from O2), I’ve checked with O2 chat support (spoke with xxxxxx). There is definitely an error somewhere in the conversations.
