Keeping your phone number when switching providers

One of the most common questions we receive particularly from English-speaking customers concerns the transfer of mobile phone numbers. For this reason, we would like to explain the current number porting process.

Two ways to transfer your phone number

In general, there are two options for number porting:

  1. number porting before the end of your contract

  2. number porting at the end of the contract

1. Number porting before the end of your contract

If you want to transfer your number before your contract ends your current provider must release the number as it will be ported out of the existing contract.

How to release your number:

  1. Log in to Mein o2

  2. Go to “Tarif & SIM-Karte”

  3. Select “Vertrag verwalten”

  4. Click “o2 Rufnummer zu einem anderen Anbieter mitnehmen”

This link will take you directly to the correct section in Mein o2.

Once you release your number the process will be confirmed. Then you can apply with your new provider to transfer your number.

Important information:

  • After successful porting, you will receive a new phone number for the remainder of your contract.

  • Number porting does not terminate your contract early. The original contract term remains unchanged.

2. Number porting after the end of the contract

If you prefer to transfer your number after your contract ends no special release is required. Phone numbers are automatically released after contract termination.

What you need to do:

  • Apply with your new provider to port your number at the end of your contract.

  • The request will be forwarded and completed once your contract has officially ended.
