low speed on 5G

Hello

I am using the O2 Mobile Unlimited Max plan (up to 300 Mbps) and 5G Plus is already activated on my SIM card. However, I am currently getting a maximum bandwidth of only about 10 to 12 Mbps at my location.

Address / Location:

Postal Code / City: 09599 Freiberg

Area: Wohnpark Gentilly

I have already restarted my device and checked the APN settings. This speed is completely insufficient.

Could you please check my connection and verify if there is any network issue or cell tower congestion at my location?

Thank you and best regards

You could deactivate 5G Plus and test it again. Sometimes it's related to that option.

I've just activated that today, it was the same speed before and after the plus

Hi @Alireza77,

welcome to our community. 😊

I have checked the net coverage at the mentioned location but there were no technical issues. Is the bandwith still low at 10-12 Mbit/s?

Best regards,

Michi

I have run several speed tests at different times of the day. During the day, the speed is around 8 to 15 Mbps, while at midnight it improves to 30–40 Mbps, and early in the morning (around 6 AM) it reaches 70 to 80 Mbps.

Therefore, I don't think it's a technical fault or a lack of coverage, but rather network congestion/overload during peak hours.

As you can see on the Cellmapper map, there is only n28 5G available. n3 is not used for 5G anymore. I would prefer to disable 5G plus or switch to LTE only.

@Alireza77

I guess you're right, if there a many people in your area, working 9to5 jobs in the homeoffice while the bandwith goes down over the day.

Maybe an additional landline tariff would help, but it would be a second contract for internet at home if you like to surf, stream movies, music etc. while reducing the mobile tariff after 24 month. 🤔

Thanks for confirming, Michi. It makes sense that high local demand during working hours is creating a bottleneck.

However, since this seems to be a consistent capacity issue due to high user density rather than just an occasional spike, I hope O2 has plans to upgrade the local cell tower capacity or add more bandwidth in this area soon to keep up with the growing demand.

In the meantime, I'll try switching between LTE and 5G Plus to see if it helps.

Could you already test, whether via LTE you receive better coverage, @Alireza77?

According to our coverage map, 5G is indeed not too strong around your place of stay and has restrictions within building, wheras LTE does not have these:

Hi Gerrit,

Thanks for the reply!

I just tested both LTE and 5G now at 10:00 PM, and the results are almost identical on both modes: around 7 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload.

If this were strictly an indoor 5G coverage issue, I should be getting significantly higher speeds off-peak (like early in the morning or late at night) when network load is minimal. However, the speeds remain consistently low regardless of the time of day or whether I use LTE or 5G.

This strongly suggests a broader local capacity constraint or backhaul bottleneck rather than just an indoor signal coverage limitation. Is there any timeline or plan to upgrade the capacity of the local cell towers in this area?

Best regards,

Alireza

Hey @Alireza77 ,

We are able to see planned expansions and upgrades a few weeks into the future. There’s nothing planned in your area around the Wohnpark Gentilly for the time being. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any plans at all in your neighbourhood for this year :)

Feel free to ask again in a few weeks and we’ll check for you once more 🌼

Kind regards, Rebecca
