PPPoE box 6441 passthrough for a secondary VPN router

I am trying to run a PPTP VPN on a secondary router (Linksys router 3200 WRT) with the 02 6441 box as the primary router. I have the ‘b’ firmware which I understand doesn’t provide the PPPoE passthrough. 

Is the restriction purely a function of the Homebox or is the restriction also not supported by the internet provider. If i select another primary router with the pass through capability, will it resolve my problem or will it still not function due to limitations from the provider?

Passthrough and second dial-in is impossible due to one-session-specification for bitstream-access!

One contract = one dial-in

Forced by the german network provider Telekom.

@Webby the limits is the o2 homebox not o2 as a (V)DSL provider. Try to get a Fritzbox 74XX/75XX and run the Linksys behind.

@Joe Doe  - Fritzbox is a good replacement for a Homebox with VPN-problem. But a second dial-in with PPPoe is impossible - also with Fritzbox! :wink:

I guess my only option is to run the VPN as the primary router or run VPN directly from the computer.

I tried with a Fritz box 74xx as a secondary router but couldn’t  run the VPN script as it needed DD-WRT.

I guess both of you have focussed on the issue that a second dial in is not possible.

Hello @Webby and welcome to our o2 community :-)

Now and then there are always usecases, where a second router has to be used directly behind the first router or modem. Since the o2 Homebox is an entry level DSL modem/router it is possible that it does not offer the functionality that you are looking for in every case. PPoE passthrough for example is not supported. In this caase, another router or modem may be needed.

As far as I can see you already recieved suggestions from our community members @Klaus_VoIP and @Joe Doe. Is there anything still unanswered where we might shed some light on? Just ask, we will answer as soon as possible :-)

Hallo Lars.

It’s not clear. Your colleagues think it is not possible due to telekom limiting to one PPPoe. However i can run the VPN from a computer in parallel with other non VPN connects. As far as i understand my secondary router with a VPN script is similar to my computer.   i will look to borrow a router in which i can turn off the firewall and enable a PPPoe pass through. It will most probably confirm what your colleagues have already indicated but it might just confirm your view that the problem lies with the security filtering in the O2 6441 box.

It´s both …

  •  the ‘b’ firmware which I understand doesn’t provide the PPPoE passthrough (router limitation) 
  • the “b” indicates bitstream access and this is specified with ONE-session (line limitation)

Also a Fritzbox is not able to work as a pure modem. If you need a log-in/dial-in with your prefered router, you need a modem as DSL-adaptor and your router is connected via LAN with the modem

Hi Klaus,

 

If i follow you, i think you are suggesting i could have a pure DSL adaptor and switch between two routers with one being VPN enabled but i can’t run both together.

I have several router connected, but only one with dial-in. All other router for VoIP, firewall, DMZ are behind the router with DSL login.

One “leading” router and other router must share IP and bandwith. German default!

I had the 02 box as primary on ip 192.168.0.1 and the linksys on ip 192.168.1.1 as secondary behind the 02 box running the 3rd party VPN through the primary router.  Without VPN enabled in the Linksys it all runs fine. When the VPN is enabled then WIFI access to the primary router is prevented. I had assumed this is due to the O2 box firewall which i cannot by pass. The set up you are running is exactly what i am trying achieve with the VPN on the secondary router sharing the the one dial in through the primary.

Oh, thats is not a PPPoE problem, because with PPPoE passthrough you have also 2 IP´s. If a good VPN is running, it prevents of course a bypass of the tunnel to other connections.

Thanks for the input.

I have been offline for a few weeks.

I have a TP-link with pass through now as a primary router.

I will test soon with the VPN script running in the secondry router but been too busy to sit down and have a go. Will post a result when available.

cheers for everybody's help including a tip on the community page that the SIP number detailed in the 02 portal should start as 4989…. rather than the quoted 89….
