Connecting to the internet via a O2 HomeBox 6742 (connected to DSL), my Ubuntu laptop can hardly reach anything except for Google and its services, including YouTube, Spotify, and Breitbandmessung.

Connections mostly time out before receiving any data, both in all web browsers and when using ping or traceroute. Sometimes I can reach websites like GitHub, StackOverflow, or o2online.de (my ISP's customer portal) when retrying and reloading frequently, but most of the time I can't reach them at all.

Connecting via ethernet cable, it's only a little bit better. The same laptop has no connection problems using any other router, including a hotspot from my android mobile and numerous coworking cafés.

The same router did not show any severe connection problems with any other client so far, including an Android 13 phone and a Lenovo ThinkPad both with Linux Mint and Windows 10, although you can see timeouts in the ThinkPad traceroute protocols.

According to my O2's customer support, the router is working without any problems and providing the services as contracted. Measuring network speed using the official broadband analysis app Breitbandmessung by German Bundesnetzagentur, sometimes the analysis does not start at all due to "no stable internet", but most of the time it reports a working connection faster than my plan requires.

  • Router: O2 HomeBox 6742, RTV7905VW-D112
  • Router Firmware Version: 4.0.0.90v
  • Plan: O2 my Home M (DSL, download up to 50 Mbit/s, upload up to 10 Mbit/s).

As the connection issues only occur with the problematic client / router combination, irrespective of the connection type (wifi or ethernet), this looks like a software / connection problem, so tried various configuration settings, like disabling IPv6 on the client side, and changing the wifi access point settings in the router config, but to no avail.

My Ubuntu network setup does not use an explicit network manager setup, as far as I can see.

  • Client: Tuxedo Infinitybook S15 gen 6
  • Ethernet interface: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller
  • CPU: Intel i5-1135G7 (x64)
  • Wireless interface: Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200
  • OS: Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS

I cross-posted this topic to an Ubuntu Linux support community (including more technical details about my client setup here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1434544/o2-homebox-6742-network-connection-timeouts).

Does anybody know a solution?

 Moin Moin,

buy a FRITZ!Box 7530 (AX U are able to use WiFi6) or any other FRITZ!Box 75xx.

The FRITZ!Box is mor compatible and has more diagnostic functions.

For WiFi on homeBox rename the 5GHz network.

Change the encryption type for WiFi.

  • Tuxedo Infinitybook S15 gen 6
  • Netzwerkkarte: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller
  • CPU: Intel i5-1135G7 (x64)
  • WLAN-Interface: Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200
  • Betriebssystem: Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS

Moin Moin,

buy a FRITZ!Box 7530

Can I use a FritzBox of my own (without paying monthly rent for a FritzBox provided by O2), will this detect the correct DSL configuration?

What is the actual problem with HomeBox routers? This looks like an obscure bug that only occurs in combination of a specific router, and a specific network adapter or Ubuntu setup???

Moin,

leider doppelt…

Yes you can use your own FRITZ!Box. If you buy your own FRITZ!Box you don‘t have to pay for renting a fritzbox. And if you send back the homebox to O2 via https://www.o2online.de/service/retoure/ than you have not to pay for the homebox too.

The homebox has sometimes problems with some hardware combinations. You found one, maybe.

The advantage of the FRITZ!Box is that you could see the quality of your connection.

@slow_2_oh_no Please buy only a Fritzbox series 75XX

I had a similar problem with Vodafone (their VodafoneStation had conflicts with ThinkPad Laptops and Huawei phones). Seems that German ISPs tend to default to cheap (and buggy) Chinese routers and charge an extra monthly fee if users want a FritzBox router instead. Good to know it is possible, at least as a DSL customer, to use a FritzBox without the monthly fee though.

For Testing the cheapest way is a used FRITZ!Box 7520 from eBay.

Should be available under 100€ most about 65-75€.

Here a litte guide (in German) to use the 7520 with O2.

Thanks for the quick replies! I marked the recommendation to use a FritzBox as a solution, but I am still curious and angry about the cheap default routers of German ISP and that they claim everything is working fine. If it is not secret that the cheap Chinese devices are in fact buggy, they should not be used by anyone at all!

Hello @slow_2_oh_no,

It's great that our users have been able to help you so much and have given you valuable tips.

If you need further help returning the homebox please let us know.

Best regards
