Internet Ping

Hello,

My FRITZ!Box 6660 Cable Wi-Fi has become unstable over the last few days on multiple devices at the same time. Even when standing next to the router, ping to the router itself shows latency spikes up to around 94 ms.

Example:
ping
100 packets transmitted, 100 received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 2.401/6.506/94.119/9.346 ms

I already tried:

  • rebooting/power-cycling the router

  • separating 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs

  • connecting specifically to 5 GHz

  • disabling band/mesh steering

  • testing 5 GHz channels 36/40/44/48

  • switching 5 GHz from Wi-Fi 6 to Wi-Fi 5

  • disabling 2.4 GHz completely

  • testing very close to the router

The issue remains. This affects more than one device, so it does not look like a single-device problem.

The FRITZ!Box event log also shows:
“FRITZ!OS update unsuccessful. Cause of error: FRITZ!OS too old [8.0]. The update attempt was performed by your internet provider.”

Could you please check whether a provider-side firmware/configuration update failed and whether this caused the Wi-Fi instability? If needed, please re-push the correct firmware/configuration or replace the FRITZ!Box.

@alexvys What is your actual firmware version from the o2 rented 6660 Fritzbox?

Hello @alexvys,

welcome to our o2 Community 😀

The same problem has occurred sporadically for some Fritzbox 6660 users in recent days. The responsible cable network operator initiated the firmware updates, which can cause the issues described.

As far as I know, the firmware has been updated meanwhile for most users. Has anything changed for you in the meantime?

Best regards

Giulia

@o2_Giulia

Hi Giulia,

Unfortunately, the issue is still present on my side. I tested again just now by pinging the router directly from very close range.

Latest result:
ping -c 100 192.168.178.1
100 packets transmitted, 100 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 2.092/14.087/95.282/20.150 ms

This is still very unstable for a local ping to the FRITZ!Box itself.

The only ‘new’ thing I saw in logs today is:

---
Internet connection established successfully. IPv4 is used over DS-Lite. AFTR gateway: b-pano.bsr.telefonica.de, IPv4 MTU: 1500.
----
DS-Lite internet connection failed: Reason for error: 2, AFTR b-pano.bsr.telefonica.de cannot be resolved [2 messages since 03.05.26 04:32:53]

But I am not sure if this is even related. But since I already tried everything including resets in the last few days - I am just sharing everything I observe.

I am hoping to also message O2 support in the chat that is available on the website once the working hours resume for it. But thats like my last hope.

Hello @alexvys,

I think you should report the connection problem by phone. You can do this via our English hotline as well. Unfortunately, it is not possible via chat.

You can reach the team tomorrow at 089 66 66 300 81 (Mon. - Fri. 8 am - 8 pm, Sat. 10 am - 6 pm).

This new error message appears to be a DNS/AFTR-server problem. Please describe the error message as precisely as possible so we can find a solution quickly.

Best regards

Giulia
