Hi all,

I'm having a very odd issue when working from home, using websites and databases that my company is hosting and that I can only access through their office VPN (OpenVPN with SHA protection if that matters).

With my new cable router (Fritzbox AVM 6660) the speed to download from those websites/databases is very slow, apparently capped at 60-70 kb/s, which is 5 times slower than normal. The biggest problem is that downloads will most often fail in Chrome, it will just say "network issue". I can however upload data at seemingly normal speeds. I can access any other website or download anything else pretty quickly. I did a few tests and I narrowed the cause down to this new router because using those office websites/databases works perfectly using an old router (Compal CH7485E) or my mobile 4G data.

Can you think of anything? This new router is DOCSIS 3.1 and uses DS lite tunnel, not sure if relevant for the problem I'm having? Or could it be something else?

Let me know if you'd need further info to better understand the problem.

Appreciate any help, thanks!

Moin,

this could be a problem with the VPN…

It could be a problem with your WLAN ´, if you use. The 6660 WLAN is not the best...

But you could test, turn off ipv6 stack on your pc.

The go to http://breitbandmessung.de check it with and without VPN.

And 2nd time with LAN cable from pc to fritzbox.

Hi @schluej,

Thanks for your reply.

I tested as you suggested to disable ipv6 on my laptop, nothing changed.

Please find below results of speed test, without VPN:

And with VPN:

Both tests were done with LAN cable connecting PC to fritzbox.

As expected, the VPN does not change download/upload speed in general. It’s only when I need to download data from my company hosted website/database that speed is low.

Do you have any idea what can be the issue then?

By the way, I see the Download speed from those speed tests is much lower compared to my “O2 my Home L Flex” theoretical speeds (100 MB/s download, 5 MB/s upload). Upload is even better than Download. How can that be?

Are u using a cable connection to the pc?

Yes Ethernet

Hi again,

I saw this post on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ShadowPC/comments/adjabo/psa_unitymedia_germany_and_shadow/

The person says he called and Unitymedia activated ipv4 for him. Would it be possible to do the same for me?

Ok similar solution here: the user could revert to Full Dual Stack instead of DS Lite, this way he can establish “real” IPv4 connection, which solved the issue.

Can o2 make it possible? Or do I need to change ISP?

Ok problem solved.

In case anyone has the same issue:

solution was to go to Fritzbox interface > Internet > Permit access > Add device for sharing > Select relevant device and make sure ipv4 is enabled and not ipv6.

Hi @kyusss ,
welcome to our community :blue_heart:
Glad to read that you found the cause with the setting in your Fritzbox and shared it with us. Thanks a lot for that!

Thanks also to schluej for the support :wilted_rose:
Are you happy with the connection and your Fritzbox?
Kind regards
Larissa
