Extraordinary cancellation because of moving abroad
o2_Jessica

If you are leaving Germany due to moving abroad you can cancel your mobile contract with us extraordinarily. In this article we explain the required steps to do so.

Do I need to use a special cancellation form?

Please fill in the cancellation form for moving abroad to terminate your mobile phone contract extraordinarily.

What documents do I need to attach?

In total you will need 3 documents. The form that is linked above and two certificates/confirmations.

  • a deregistration certificate of your present place of residence in Germany
  • a registration certificate of your new home abroad or alternatively a confirmation of your employer, landlord or university (enrollment confirmation)

Are there any extra costs for the cancellation?

In the event of extraordinary termination due to moving abroad, a down payment equal to one month of your regular basic fee is due. This fee will be included with your final invoice.

Alternatively you can pay this fee in an o2 shop.

💡If your contract has a monthly cancellation period we will cancel it without extra costs.

Where do I submit my cancellation?

You have the following options to submit your cancellation:

By letter

If you decide to send the cancellation by post, we recommend using an insured letter (Einschreiben).

Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG,
Kundenbetreuung / Retention Services
90345 Nürnberg

Online with the cancelation button

Find the cancelation button here → o2 Kündigungsbutton

The preselection. Choose Postpaid-/Festnetz-Vertrag here, as you want to cancel your mobile contract.

Make sure to check the correct box so your extraordinary cancellation (außerordentliche Kündigung) can be processed correctly.

How to pay the final invoice if my bank account is already closed?

Please note that we issue our invoices retroactively. This means that your final invoice may arrive after you have moved. Please check the invoice and the billing period specified therein.

If you no longer have a bank account in Germany, you can transfer the amount yourself.

Account owner: Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG
Reference : your customer number
IBAN: DE16700202700005713153
BIC: HYVEDEMMXXX

Where to find your customer number on your invoice.

💡So keep in mind: three documents are needed!

The cancellation form, the deregistration certificate as well as one of these options: notification of the new foreign domicile, confirmation of employer/landlord or university.

Hi O2_Jessica,

I am moving back to the UK in two weeks and I would like to cancel my phone contract.

I understand that I have to fill in the form but I will not be able to provide "the a notification of your new, foreign domicile or alternatively a confirmation of your employer or landlord" because I am moving back to my native country to study. Is there any other proof I can provide as an alternative?

You should send in confrmation from your college or university that you are returning to full-time education in the UK. That should be sufficient.

Hi bs0

Would a letter of registration to my uni work for this?

As long as it shows that you are studying there after you leave Germany that should be fine as well. o2 just needs to see proof that you are actually living / working / studying in another country. If the specific document you send in is not sufficient then I am sure they will let you know 😉

Great thank you!

Another quick question:

I will close my bank account before the cancellation is processed (as I have to wait for 5th September for the letter from my uni) and before my bill for the end of this month is due - will they send me an invoice for all outstanding charges? e.g. this month's bill and the 3 month fee for cancellation.
