Hallo,

Since one week my iPhone 4s wi-fi doesn't work. Unfortunately, it is the known "wi-fi greyed out" problem. The phone was purchased in May 2012, the Apple's guarantee is over. 2 year warranty is stiil valid, thus, according to www.apple.com/de/legal/statutory-warranty/ my phone can be repaired by O2 without any charges. Is it correct?

First, I am sorry to hear that you're having this well-known bug.

Unfortunately, your link does not work for me, so I cannot comment on what's written on Apple's site.
As there have been some misunderstanding on how the 2-year warranty in the EU works, I want to shed some light: this warranty means that you will get a free repair if the defect has been in the product since delivery, and has not just occurred during the two years. One can argue that this indeed is a design flaw as it has been reported many times, but I think that o2 will still reject your case. You could rather turn to Apple and reference the many reports on the problem - perhaps they might want to give you free repair

Thank you very much for the detailed answer! I guess I have to try talking to Apple.

P.S. Just for a case, I have corrected the link in my first post.

Can anyone from O2 officially comment my situation? Thanks!

Hi RTiger,

I might have good news for you:

I have one iPhone 4S which also showed this behavior. It was just out of Apple Care's two year extended warranty (bought mid of October 2011, so Apple Care expired mid of October 2013).

I called them and asked if this well known problem would give me another free repair even if the device was out of warranty.

I don't know if it was because I had bought the two year warranty extension or if the device was replaced two times already but they really agreed on sending me a free replacement unit.

Perhaps you can try the same at the Appe Care Hotline or in an Apple Store nearby.

Hi unbrokencrimes,

Thank you very much for the information.

I have already tried both possibilities: I have talked to Apple Support and I have visited the Apple Store. They say that they are aware of the problem with 4s, but nevertheless the replacement will cost 200+ euros because the guarantee is over.

This situation looks strange to me because it is their official software that has killed their original hardware. It would be fair to provide a free replacement.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience!
