TelefnicaO2 will convert the existing 3G network to more powerful 4G technology in line with all mobile network operators in Germany.

Back in November, 2020 ,Markus Haas ,CEO announced plans to switch off the 3G/UMTS mobile network by mid 2021, ( Ahead of schedule )

How far are those plans progressing?

Has the O2 Technical team considered the effect the switch off might have on the Homespot routers.?

By default the routers are configured to use 3G and LTE. With 3G being the fall back. In crowed networks the router could fall back to 3G. Will there be a firmware update to those who might be impacted ?

This issue needs to be addressed for those who may be impacted by the change.

Perhaps the change over has been announced in the German forum ?

Can someone from O2 respond and explain the change over in this  forum ?

Hi @ukguy ,

I’ll try to answer what I can :hugging:

The date is set to the end of 2021.

We can’t, however, comment on the progress.

Since it is more of a conversion, a lot of capacity will not be lost but instead still be available via LTE.

How it will work in detail? I don’t really know, I guess it also depends on the different types of stations, how those are connected to the network and so on.

An update is not required, since the HomeSpot only works with what it has access to. Reconnecting to a different type network is in its basics (the 3G/LTE-Option should also be the standard option), that is why I don’t think that there is a need for an update.

This issue needs to be addressed for those who may be impacted by the change.

We´ve already started with the communication in cases, where 3G is the only option (or where LTE is not being used).

I’m not really sure if we announced it here, we did post it here:

https://www.telefonica.de/news/corporate/2020/11/aus-3g-wird-4g-bis-ende-2021-telefonica-deutschland-o2-beschleunigt-netzausbau-an-18-000-standorten.html

and created a dedicated site for that:

3G-Abschaltung: Alle Infos von o2 (o2online.de)

Best regards,

Kurt
