The company was founded in 1995 by the mobile phone company VIAG Interkom.
In 2002 the name VIAG Interkom was adapted to O2 Germany.
In 2006, the Spanish telephone company Telefónica acquired O2 with its subsidiaries in Germany, Great Britain and Ireland for a total of GBP17.7 billion.
2007 at International Radio Exhibition, O2 Germany presented its discount brand Fonic.
2008, O2 Germany became the Telefónica O2 Germany
2010 The company purchased LTE frequencies for 1.38 billion euros.
2011 A further change of name followed on 1 April The company was now called Telefónica Germany
2012 Telefónica Deutschland was launched. In September 2012, Telefónica Deutschland Holding AG was created by the German company of Telefónica Germany Verwaltungs GmbH
2014 Telefónica Germany took over E-Plus for 8.6 billion euros from the owner, the Dutch KPN Group. This required significant physical network integration This was completed by the end of 2018. Following the merger with E-Plus
2015 At the spectrum auction, Telefónica Germany invested 1.2 billion euros in additional mobile frequencies.
