New DSL connexion frequently disconnecting a few seconds only each time
Hello!
I just got activated yesterday, and on both days, around the end of the afternoon (it seems), my connection starts dropping every few minutes for a few seconds at a time, sometimes longer, each time. It’s very annoying when I’m working and having calls.
I have My Home L and using Ethernet. I wonder if it could be the router or if it’s an issue affecting other people as well. I’ve only asked one neighbor so far and he doesn’t have this problem.
Also, dear o2 staff: I doubt that calling the hotline will help. The last times I’ve needed them, they had no clue about anything I asked. I also don’t think a technician will be able to see/test the issue properly, as it happens randomly and for a few seconds at a time only. The forum team seems amazing though!
Thank you!
Another small thing: I’m using this account because I’ve made the mistake of creating it before being activated, but I use the same email on both and it seems like I can’t delete this account. My other account has all the contract info. Let me know if it’s something I could do at some point.

@gjolicoeur what VDSL router you exactly use?
@Joe Doe A Homebox 2 6441 that I was given by a friend. I know it’s probably not the greatest option and not supported, but I’d like to rule out other causes before spending money on a FritzBox just to try if it helps. If I end up spending 100 euro on one and the problem persists… it wouldn’t be great.
@gjolicoeur this will not/cannot work as o2 home boxes are only rental devices and are tied to the previous customer account/connection. that's why it doesn't work. please try to get a used Fritzbox 7530 or 7590. if not possible, a Fritzbox 7490. The advantage is that from firmware 7.20 the entire menu can be set to English. there is also detailed information on the DSL line values.
You could buy a 7520 from eBay too. It is below 100€ For a used one.
@Joe Doe It does work, why do you say it doesn’t? It worked instantly without having to do anything and isn’t tied to anyone else after a factory reset. It works very well in fact, except for this small issue which seems to only happens at specific hours at the end of the day. The modem itself could be too old or on an older firmware, but it could also be an issue with the old wiring in my building, the service in the area, or a number of other factors. Anyway, I’m not here to debate about the ethics of using a second-hand modem. I’ll happily switch to a Fritzbox if the modem ends up being the issue. I would just like to hear about other solutions for this problem that I could try before spending more money, solutions related to other things than the modem. I’ve just had an expensive move and am not ready to spend another 100 that quickly. Thanks!
@schluej Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll get one once I’ve ruled out other causes.
Another important detail: It seems to happen at the same time every day, around 5-6-7pm, which I’m guessing is higher traffic time and would likely be unrelated to the modem.
@gjolicoeur Normally, this o2 router should not run on your connection. It is guaranteed not to get automatic firmware updates. You are welcome to report a fault, only I can already see the questions from the service employee before the Homebox comes and the fault acceptance is refused as long as this router is connected.
With a actual Fritzbox we can get a screenshot with an overview the line quality and problems. You can’t get this with an o2 Homebox.
@Joe Doe Yeah, having logs would be great. What makes you say that it shouldn’t work though? Also, do you happen to know the current firmware version for the 6441? Just wanna check where mine stands. Anyway, the idea here was to keep the Homebox out of the equation, as it’s something I’ll just replace if it is indeed the cause. But for now, I just wanna rule out other stuff. The fact that my problems happen always around the same time and in the same pattern is interesting and might not be related to the modem. I’d hate to spend 100 euro on a Fritzbox for the problem to persist. Any other suggestions that could be causing this aside from the modem?
@gjolicoeur Wait up an o2 moderator will visit your thread. He will confirm that such an o2 homebox that was not rented from o2 for this dsl line should not normally run. Not to mention the problems on the hotline when reporting a fault of the line.
@Joe Doe I know a second-hand box is not supported and discouraged here, which is what you’re doing right now and that the o2 mod will do as well. No need to repeat this constantly. But it works. It does work. Maybe the fact that it’s old brings more issues, or maybe it doesn’t have the latest firmware, but it works. Anyway, I’m still paying for this service and would like to fix this, so if you have nothing else to add but thump the rulebook at me, please move on with your day.
Alright, so the problem seems to be gone, no thanks to this forum. Here’s what I think might have helped, for posterity: In the modem settings, I’ve turned off the 2.4Ghz Wifi band and now only use the 5Ghz one. I’ve read somewhere that the 2.4 could overload the modem when nearby people start turning on their devices after work. Something like that. I’m not sure if that’s what did it, but no problem at all in the last few days.
Hello @gjolicoeur, thank you for your feedback :-)
I am glad to hear you already found a solution for this issue.
An o2 Homebox that was not ordered with your contract but belonged to another on may under some circumstances work on an o2 connection that it was not given out for.
The disdvantage is of course that you will likely not reieve any support from our technical departement since this router may already been in use with another connection and thus be locked to another DSL account, it is also possible that the firmware on the router is too old to recieve updates und bugfixes.
All in all, it is good to read that everything works now as it should, nevertheless the WiFi connection should never influence the LAN connection, no matter how many devices are around you. It may be possible that the device could be defective.
Regards,
Lars
Thanks @o2_Lars. You’re right, it wasn’t the Wifi. I’ve changed some settings in my LAN adapter settings (in device manager) that ended up doing the trick. No issues in the last few days, but will continue to monitor. Just to compare: could you tell me which one is the latest version of the Homebox 2 6441 firmware? I’m on 1.01.34v so just curious to see how far behind I am.
Hello @gjolicoeur,
I am glad to hear the issues with the LAN connection were so easily solved :-)
Regarding the firmware you are missing several important security updates (see also: “Sicherheitslücke in Homebox 6441?”, german) and I doubt the homebox you are using will be able to recieve any updates. The last available version ist the 1.01.38 from last year, the version you are using is quite some time older.
Since using a homebox with an outdated firmware may be a security issue I recommend to eitehr rent a router from us or buy an own one that still has support from the manufacturer.
