I'm very sorry if my terrible German above was incomprehensible.

I finally activated my new VDSL connection with o2, it is an o2 6431 modem/router. I have a brand new Asus N66 router I would like to use behind it, but I cannot seem to get it to work. I've called o2 to get my login/password for pppoe but it simply does not connect. I'm confused why the user manual for the 6431 modem says there is a pppoe-passthrough option but it simply doesn't exist in the admin area!

If anyone has any tips, I would so greatly appreciate it because I have tried my best to read all the information I can in German but it is so confusing trying to sort an already complex thing in a foreign language.

Thank you so much and look forward to any help and pointers!

Not every o2 6431 router support pppoE . If you have a bitstream vdsl connection than you have a box without pppoe. You said that you could not find it so i think you dont have it.

If you send me your customer number as a private message i can told you what kind of router you have.

Regards

Stefan

Hallo,

I've sent you my kundennummer via PM.

Does this mean that in some cases it is actually 100% impossible to use a different router than the default o2 modem/router?

Thank you!

Thank you!

You can always use a different router, that is capable of VDSL. But only for the internet, not for using the telephone.

There are ways to transfer the telephone data from a running o2 Modem but that is not officially supported and no one guarantees that it will work forever.

Hi Schmatzler,

I just don't understand why o2 wouldn't allow me to use the provided modem/router only as a modem? I also don't require the telephone, just internet.

My Asus router is so much faster and more stable/powerful than the 6431 it would not make any sense not to use it. Why would they disable pppoe passthrough?

By 'a different router, that is capable of VDSL', do you mean one that is also a modem?

It has nothing to do with allowance - the landline is provided by the "Deutsche Telekom" and they set up their infrastructure in a way that there is only one connection allowed. When you use the 6431 there is already one connection - with PPPoE you would create a second one which is technically impossible here.

Your connection type is VDSL - so you can use any router that is VDSL-capable and use it directly on the telephone socket. That is not forbidden and if you just use the internet, you have all data for that.

Thx for the PN. You have a router without pppoe. You can not use the ASUS N66U behind the 6431.

Do you have any examples of VDSL-capable routers that work with o2?

Yes, for example, Fritz 7490

ja, zum Beispiel Fritz 7490

Thank you for the swift response.

I am really hoping to find a router than (1) supports vdsl and (2) allows for dd-wrt. I am seeking solid support for encryption and VPN. Sadly none of the Fritz boxes support dd.wrt,
